Thailand: Months of Remote Operating
What I learned running a UK business from Chiang Mai and Bangkok — and why distance forces clarity.
I spent months operating from Thailand. Mornings were deep work. Afternoons were calls back to the UK. Evenings were for thinking, walking, and not looking at a screen.
What worked: writing everything down. If a decision isn't in a doc, it didn't happen. The team in the UK knew exactly what was expected, and I knew exactly what was running.
What broke: anything that needed me to make a fast call in real-time. We rebuilt those processes — escalation rules, written authority, clear ownership — and the business ran better, not worse.
The lesson is simple. Operating from another timezone forces you to build the systems you should have had anyway. Once they're there, you can run from anywhere.
What to do next
- Write down the outcome you need before choosing features.
- Ask for scope, ownership and ongoing costs in writing.
- Compare the smallest useful version, not an unlimited wish list.
