Why I Mentor Young People Getting Into Business

I had mentors who changed my trajectory. This is why I want to do the same — and who I'm trying to reach.

I started in IT recycling at 13 — taking the train from Rose Grove to Blackburn to work 9 to 5 at LCWS. I was a kid in a warehouse, but the people there treated me like a real part of the operation, and I learned more in those summers than I did in most years that followed.

Every meaningful step I've taken since has had a mentor behind it. Someone who'd been further down the road, who told me when I was wrong, and who pointed me at the next thing before I knew to ask.

I want to do the same — for young people getting into business, founders building their first real thing, and operators who want to grow but don't know who to ask.

If that's you, reach out. No pitch deck needed.

What to do next

  • Write down the outcome you need before choosing features.
  • Ask for scope, ownership and ongoing costs in writing.
  • Compare the smallest useful version, not an unlimited wish list.
